This sketch is inspired from Legend of Zelda, Majora's Mask. It's depicting the southern swamp. The image is inspired by Akira Himekawa's depiction of the Southern Swamp in her manga, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, which provides readers with a view of what the region looks like during the plot.
The idea of the swamp was really cool to me, and Majora's Mask takes this a step further by making the swamp toxic. I used this time to experiment with my sketches of bark, leaves, water, and vines. Since I don't draw environments or backgrounds often, this was a challenge.
Majora's Mask is perhaps one of my favorite Zelda titles. The game is filled with dark themes, from the five stages of grief, to dealing with the passing of a loved one. It is still considered the black sheep of the series.
I decided to keep this image as a pencil sketch because of how clear the image turned out. I felt that adding ink would distract from the design. The image was drawn on a 14" x 17" page, with a border thickness of 3".
